I love a lot of things, but there are few things I love more than nooch — aka nutritional yeast. I put nooch on EVERYTHING. Tofu scramble, tofu strips, soups, stews, mac n’ cheese, salad dressings… honestly, there aren’t many days that go by that I don’t eat nooch. I also eat it on popcorn (a lot). Sometimes (most times) the popcorn is just a vehicle to eat nooch. Other times, though, I like to spice it up a bit with my BBQ Nooch Popcorn Seasoning.
What is Nooch?
Nooch, or nutritional yeast, is a deactivated yeast. You can get it at most health food stores and bulk stores, but it’s also been creeping it’s way into larger supermarket chains. It’s got a cheesy, savoury taste that adds a wonderful depth to dishes.
Vegans have been consuming nooch for as long as I can remember! And while that might not be too long (roughly 12 years), it’s been a staple in my pantry ever since.
Nooch is known for being high in B-vitamins. This is great, but don’t be fooled — we vegans still need to take our B12!
BBQ Nooch Popcorn Seasoning
This BBQ Nooch Popcorn Seasoning is SO easy to make. In fact, I think it is the easiest recipe I have ever shared. BUT, it is delicious and so deserving of it’s own post! And, of course, it is vegan and gluten-free!
The seasoning is salty, sweet, and smokey. It has nooch (of course), as well as brown sugar, chili powder, salt, garlic powder, and smoked paprika!
You don’t have to use smoked paprika, but I love the flavour it brings to the seasoning.
Sprinkle this BBQ Nooch Popcorn Seasoning LIBERALLY on popcorn. Make sure you’ve used some oil or drizzled some vegan butter on the popcorn, otherwise it won’t stick very well. And trust me, you’re going to want this seasoning to stick!
I haven’t tried this seasoning on anything else, but I think it would be great sprinkled on roasted potatoes or kale chips (if kale chips are a thing you believe in).

We’re going to make this recipe! We always have nutritional yeast in our pantry and we actually add it to all our mac and cheese, even if not vegan. It’s amazing!
The Vegan Harvest
Nooch does add such a great flavour to Mac n Cheese! I hope you like it in this seasoning!

Marieke – this is the perfect seasoning for popcorn, I made it this evening and I am in love.
Salty, sweet, spicy, savoury – it’s the perfect amount of each!

Thanks, Kristen! I am so glad you enjoyed it!!
Alexa
How do you get the seasoning to stick to the popcorn?
The Vegan Harvest
Hi Alexa, you’ll need to make sure the popcorn is evenly coated in some vegan butter or was popped using oil! It won’t stick to dry popped popcorn.
