I’ve been vegan for over 13 years now. I also love to cook. And yet, I still open my fridge at dinner time and think “What can I cook that is easy, fast, and healthy?” I often resort to making my favourite tofu strips with maple dill sauce and a big salad. I have been resorting to that meal a lot the last few months, and I decided it was time to try a different way of preparing tofu strips. The result? These vegan and gluten-free Everything Bagel Tofu Strips!
How to make Everything Bagel Tofu Strips
These everything bagel tofu strips are really easy to make — perfect for a weeknight meal!
All you need to do is slice your tofu, dip it in the dredging mixture, then coat in a yummy mix of gluten free breadcrumbs (I like gf panko), nutritional yeast, and everything bagel seasoning!
The tofu strips will take about 30-35 minutes in the oven. This gives you enough time to tidy the kitchen a bit, make a dipping sauce, and prepare a simple salad to eat alongside the strips!
What are the best ingredients to use?
Tofu: The best tofu to use in this recipe is extra firm tofu. Even better if it is pressed tofu (like this Soyganic Pressed Tofu). If you’re not using a pressed tofu, I recommend wrapping your block of extra firm tofu in paper towel or a clean dish towel and gently pressing out some of the excess moisture.
Everything Bagel Seasoning: I was gifted some Trader Joe’s Everything But The Bagel seasoning and I used that in this recipe (yum!) But, you can use your favourite seasoning blend! Just read the ingredients to see if the blend has salt. If it does, omit the extra salt from the recipe. If your seasoning does not have salt, you’ll want to add 1/2 tsp-3/4 tsp of salt.
Chickpea Flour: I use chickpea flour in this recipe, but you can sub out the chickpea flour for another gluten-free flour. If you want to use a different flour, I recommend rice flour or an all purpose gluten-free flour blend like Bob’s Red Mill 1-1 Gluten-Free Flour.

- 1/3 cup gluten-free panko crumbs (or another gf breadcrumbs)
- 1/3 cup nutritional yeast
- 1/2 tbsp everything bagel seasoning
- salt, to taste (some premade seasonings are already salty, only add salt if your mix does not contain salt)
- 1/2 cup chickpea flour*
- 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp water
- 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 pack extra firm tofu (pressed is the best!)

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Farenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchement paper and lightly cover with oil.

You will need two medium sized shallow bowls. In one, mix the panko, nutritional yeast, everything bagel seasoning, and salt (if using). In the other bowl, mix the chickpea flour, water, and apple cider vinegar.

Lighlty pat the tofu to remove excess moisture then slice into strips, about 1/2 inch thick.
-
Dip the tofu into the chickpea flour mixture, shake a little to remove any excess batter. Then dip into the everything bagel seasoning mix and coat on all sides. Place on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat this process with each piece of tofu.
-
Bake the strips for 20 minutes, remove from oven and flip, then bake for another 10-15 minutes.
