Are you travelling to Winnipeg this summer? Are you thinking about visiting Winnipeg? Are you a seasoned Winnipegger just looking for some fun things to do? Are you vegan and worried about finding a place to eat while you’re exploring the city? If you’re still reading, then this post is for you! I’m going to talk all about eating vegan in Winnipeg, and the fun things you can do in between meals!
Pin this for later!
In this post, we’re going to hit up four different areas of Winnipeg: The Exchange District, The Forks, Broadway, and Wolseley. This is by no means a comprehensive list of everything to eat and do in these areas, and there are so many other great neighbourhoods to check out, too! But, it’s a good start!
Hopefully after reading this post, you’ll know all about eating vegan in Winnipeg — and come to love the prairie city as much as I do!
The Exchange District
What to do? You could start with a tour from the Exchange District Biz to learn about the area. Then maybe you want to stop at all the wonderful shops in the area, like Tiny Feast and Tara Davis! There are also so many wonderful arts and culture organizations located in the exchange. Stop at aceart inc., Urban Shaman, or Platform Gallery to see some great contemporary art, or check out the Winnipeg Architecture Foundation to learn about the city’s built environment and maybe buy some neat Winnipeg related merchandise for your friends!
Where to eat? If you’re looking for a quick lunch, I highly recommend Acorn Cafe in Generation Green. They’re an all vegan cafe and have daily lunch special and lots of delicious sweet treats. For dinner, a must is Deer+Almond. It’s not a vegan restaurant, but they often have a few vegan dishes on their menu or can adapt something to suit your needs!
Where to drink? For an iced coffee you have to stop at Parlour! They’ve got a selection of different non-dairy milk to choose from and make a great latte. If you’re looking for something with booze, check out Forth. It can be a bit confusing–they have a cafe, a basement bar, and a rooftop bar (weather permitting). The basement bar is cool and cozy, but the rooftop bar gives you a great view and is lovely on a nice day.
The Forks
What to do? The Forks is a National Historical Site and you could spend an entire day exploring everything it has to offer! You can visit the Children’s Museum or the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. You can walk along the river and explore the outdoor areas. Or you could shop inside the market area for books, gifts, clothes, and more! There is also a big antique store you can check out! Make sure to check out the Forks’ calendar, too — they always have different programming going on!
Where to eat? Very close to the Forks on the Esplanade Riel bridge there is a little kiosk called Le Monkey Bar. They’re a seasonal, all vegan joint for cold summer treats! Pick up something sweet and go for a walk along the river. If you’re looking for a meal, this post on vegan options at the Forks Market will give you more choices than you need!
Where to drink? You have to check out The Common if you’re at the Forks! You can enjoy a glass of wine or some beer inside or out.
Broadway
What to do? Broadway between Main Street and Osborne Street North is such a gorgeous stretch. There are some great historic places to check out along the way, like Union Station (designed by the same architects of Grand Central Terminal in New York!), Upper Fort Garry, and the Manitoba Legislative Building. There is also a wonderful stock of modernist structures. A stroll along Broadway is worth your time, but you can also stop into Dalnavert Museum! It’s a small Victorian Mansion that you can walk through, and they also have wonderful programming throughout the year.
Where to eat? You MUST grab a doughnut at Oh’Doughnuts! They always have several vegan options, and one or twice a week they offer a vegan and gluten-free doughnut. They post their menu the night before on their Instagram, so you can always see what they’re offering in advance!
Where to drink? Fools & Horses is the place to go grab a coffee or even a glass of wine or beer! They always have some seasonal drinks that are worth trying, and they do have some vegan bites if you want something with your beverage!
Wolseley
What to do? I live very close to Wolseley, so I am often in the neighbourhood walking around. Along Westminster there are a few little shops. It’s a nice place to go for a walk on a Saturday morning.
Where to eat? Along Westminster there is a little juice bar called Verde that offers bites like salads and smoothies. Most of their menu is vegan, and much if not all gluten-free. There is also Organic Planet, which is a co-op grocery store and they prepare a few grab and go bites (try the prairie baked tofu!). Tall Grass Prairie bakery also sells some vegan things (but nothing gluten-free).
Where to drink? You can get some juice or coffee from Verde. There are a few nice places that are on the edge of Wolseley but technically in West Broadway. You can get a vegan, macadamia nut milk hot chocolate from Thom Bargen, or go to Langside Grocery for a cocktail (they also have some vegan bites, and most of their menu is gluten-free!)
There are many other places for eating vegan in Winnipeg that I couldn’t get to in this post, but I’ll quickly name a few more that I love! Cocoabeans (all gluten-free, many vegan options), Circle Kitchen (all vegan and gluten-free), Sukothai, Sabai Thai, East India Company, Blufish (sushi), Little Goat, Banh Mi King, Falafel Place, Chaeban (ice cream) — there are so many more, but this’ll give you a good start! There are many other places that offer vegan things that I can’t eat due to being celiac. You can always leave a comment or send me a note and I can suggest more place depending what area(s) you’re in!
I hope you enjoy eating vegan in Winnipeg! Let me know what your favourite places are!
